‘Y’ Fathers, Sons Turn Rock Hounds
Under the leadership of Gerard Anthony Rancourt , Jr. [born April 19, 1945 in Meriden, CT] of 300 Balwin Ave., father and son members of the Meriden ‘Y’ rock hounds class have been assiduously learning about rocks and minerals. The program, which was developed as part of the ‘Y’ family life program, asks fathers and sons to participate together in classes and field trips. Already the members have collected interesting specimens on numerous field trips to mines and quarries in Connecticut. Additional trips to other states will be planned in the spring.
Mr. Gérard Anthony Rancourt , Jr. [born 1945 in Meriden, CT] has been an amateur in the field of mineralogy and geology for many years. His personal collection of over 3,000 specimens is one of the largest in the Meriden area. He is presently attending the University of Hartford and majoring in geology.
Initial interest in the rock hounds class has been so strong that the members are planning to form a rock and mineral club. Persons interested in joining the club are urged to call the Meriden Y.M.C.A.

Rock Hounds Gather Tonight At Local Y
The Meriden YMCA is making progress in the formation of the first class “rock hounds” club. Rock hounds are people who, along with other harbingers of spring, head for the open spaces with hammers and pick to search for collectors items of rocks and minerals. A new highway or building excavation, an old mine or quarry or just a big pile of rocks provides an interesting past time for these collectors.
As a result of a course given by Gerald Rancourt, interest is now developing for the formation of a club which would hold regular meetings and field trips to special collectors’ sites. Persons already interested in the group include Earle and Paul Smith, Robert and John Wilson, Irene and Harold Gariepy, Gerald Rancourt, Michael Chernik, Mae Cooper, Alfred Koch, Jack McNeil, Michael Greco, Robert Hill, and David and Bruce Ward.
