Johnson State College
Student/Faculty Petition
Abenaki Recognition
Bill S. 222
Dear Vince Illuzzi,
May name is Whitney Erskine and I am a student from Johnson State College in Johnson VT. I come to you today as a representative of Johnson State students and a few faculty members.
Enclosed is a petition of 192 student and faculty signatures that were signed in support of the passing of Bill S. 222; the bill that if passed would allow State Recognition for the Abenaki Tribe. I am, along with many of the other signers that once were, a student of Fred Wiseman; archaeologist, ecologist, and Professor of many Native American classes offered at Johnson State. Through his courses Professor Wiseman educated on the history of the Abenaki’s deep heritage and culture, as well as their challenging current events.
Though not everyone who signed the petition has taken a Wiseman's class, I set up a table on campus with printed information on the subject and spoke to each person who signed as to what passing this bill would mean to the Abenaki’s and their long standing struggle to be recognized as an official tribe and not merely a minority.
It is my hope that this petition will aid in the bills process as it passes through the Senate, to demonstrate the support of non-Abenaki’s on the passing of Bill S. 222; for official Vermont State Recognition of the Abenaki Tribe.
Thank you for your time and consideration on the matter.
Sincerely,
Whitney Erskine
Johnson State Senior

MY COMMENTARY:
The letter dated April 23, 2010 was created by Ms. Whitney Erskine, and the SIMPLE PLAIN DYNAMIC is that her "PETITION" on the behalf of her VT State Johnson State College Archaeologist, Ecologist "Professor" (of many Native American Classes) IS totally biased and manipulative!
How MANY of these students, [or their relatives] claim to be descended from the "Abenaki"? How many of these students of Johnson State College and particularly of Mr. Frederick M. Wiseman's, concluded or felt that, if they didn't sign such Petition, that they would be graded more severely, in the negative, by their "Professor" for not doing so?
Or, on the other end of the dynamic, how many of these 'signers'/students felt that if they signed such a petition, that they would might more likely to receive by their educational instructor, on a more positive level, an inflated grade from their Professor [and or another Faculty member that does support and ally with Fred M. Wiseman Sr. at that College] and therefore, gain a better grade within the classroom?
I think you get my point.....
How many of these students went on to a field of employment wherein such work involves "Native Americans" within the State of Vermont etc., and thus Mr. Frederick M. Wiseman PhD himself would become or is now one of their "senior" colleagues?
Certainly, the "signers" of this Petition did, sign on the dotted line, and some of the surnames in bold type, herein transcribed, MAY in fact be related to the "members" of these 4 or 5 groups of "Abenakis" under the generic "Native American" State of VT "recognition" by the Legislature, or be Card-Holding Members today of these groups. Most of the persons taking Mr. Fred M. Wiseman's classes are VERY LIKELY alleged and perhaps re-invented Native American descendants, perhaps based on their own family "Grandma-Said-So-Stories" passed down a few generations.
Either way, such a "petition" is HIGH QUESTIONABLE as to it's merits and indeed was sent directly to Vincent Illuzzi, a strong-supporter of these dubious "Abenaki" groups and their representatives.
"Dirty Politic's", as usual.
I will be posting further documents from this Johnson State College folder, that pertain to "Professor" Wiseman, Sr. [and he can accuse my person of 'stealing' these documents as well, but obviously, I have the SOURCE of where these ORIGINAL documents came from ..... to-my-person, legally through the U.S. Postal Service a few months ago].
